Enjoying wine with a clear conscience

Sustainable wines at the Slow Food Fair "Market of Good Taste" in Stuttgart

"Good-clean-fair” is the central motto and the requirement that Slow Food places on food and its production. At the "Market of Good Taste" from 21.-24. April 2022 at the Stuttgart Exhibition Center this year, the term "sustainability" will be added to wine.

dr Nina Wolff, Chairwoman of Slow Food Germany eV: “Slow Food Germany was founded 30 years ago. It is time that we sensitize our visitors to sustainably produced wines. Because viticulture has to make its contribution to climate protection and species protection and reduce plant protection. Fungus-resistant grape varieties have a key function here. We want consumers to get acquainted with these high-quality wines and break down reservations.”

Visitors can embark on a taste experience (for most of them completely new). The German regional group of PIWI International is presenting more than 30 wines from resistant grape varieties in Hall 4 at Stand D100.

They are created by crossing different varieties with the aim of increasing resistance, especially to the most common fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and downy mildew. The infestation with these diseases makes the winegrowers more and more difficult - also due to the climate changes - up to the total loss of entire vintages. The last year was an example of this and affected both conventional farms and especially organic farms.

It is now undisputed that the increased cultivation of these new grape varieties will be an essential part of the solution to this problem. With them, a reduced effort for plant protection is possible and more ecology is achieved through higher biodiversity. But they also pay off economically, because the costs for pesticides and working hours are lower. Andreas Dilger, winemaker from Freiburg and chairman of PIWI Germany: "Consumers can drink the wines from these varieties with a clear conscience, doing something for the environment. If the wines then come from the German wine-growing regions, our German producers will also benefit”.

It is now up to the consumer: anyone who has never had a Johanniter, Souvignier gris or Muscaris in their glass does not know that these wines go just as well with good appetizers as Riesling, Pinot Blanc and Muskateller. And a nice roast or steak doesn't have to be Lemberger, Pinot Noir or Schwarzriesling - Prior, Cabernet Cortis or Satin Noir also go well with it. These are just a few examples of the many PIWI varieties that stand for a wide variety of tastes.

PIWI Deutschland eV based in Freiburg/Breisgau has been the German regional group of PIWI International, Wädenswi (Switzerland) since 2020. The aim of the association is to promote the cultivation and dissemination of PIWI grape varieties and the wines made from them. Winegrowing should thus become more sustainable and climate-friendly. The members are winegrowers, vine growers and institutions from the wine sector, as well as traders, restaurateurs and consumers interested in wine.
