The examiners rated the quality of the presented PIWI wines, wines from fungus-resistant grape varieties such as Cabernet blanc, Muscaris or Cabernet Carbon, as particularly high. Of a total of 64 PIWI wines tested, 19 scored more than 85 points. But only 13 of them could become EcoWinner 2021.

PRESS RELEASE

132 German organic wines awarded as EcoWinner 2021

The best organic wines in Germany for 2021 have been determined. At the 26th EcoWinner competition by ECOVIN, 132 wines in 14 categories won a medal. An independent jury of experts tasted and rated 641 organic wines in Oppenheim on June 22nd and 23rd. The competition also reflected the major trends in the organic wine industry: more natural wines, excellent PIWI wines, lower alcohol levels.

Around 120 organic wineries applied for the award this year with their wines. However, only the top 20 percent of a wine category could win the EcoWinner medal - provided that the tasters rated a wine in the blind sample with at least 85 out of 100 possible points.

The EcoWinner jury 2021, led by wine journalist Dagmar Ehrlich, was composed of 35 tasters from all over Germany. They were specialist dealers and sommeliers, scientists and wine critics - they were all proven wine experts. For two days they awarded points and discussed - often controversially - the wines they tasted.

Natural wines are still in trend. 24 experimental, natural still wines of very different types and seven PetNats ("pétillant naturel") were in the competition. “As an organic farming association, natural wines are a big issue for us. They lead us into a completely new world of taste, show that wine can be completely different and enrich the great variety of organic wines, ”said ECOVIN managing director Petra Neuber on the occasion of the tasting.

The tendency towards lower alcohol levels in wine can still be observed. “For years, the white wines with more than 12.5 percent alcohol by volume were our largest competition category. We now have more than twice as many lighter white wines, i.e. less than 12.5 percent by volume, as heavy, ”says Neuber. The lower alcohol levels in organic viticulture are made possible solely by an early harvest so that too much sugar is not fermented into alcohol. Partial dealcoholization is not permitted on organic farms.

ECOVIN looks back on an exciting EcoWinner competition in 2021 and is already looking forward to the 27th round next year.
