For the first time, a Swedish wine is served with the main course at the Nobel Banquet. The choice fell on the Immelen 2022 from Kullabergs Vingård.
„This is an incredible recognition of our long-standing commitment to quality. Sweden is on its way to becoming a wine country to be reckoned with“, says Victor Dahl, CEO.
At the Nobel Banquet 2025, guests will be able to taste a Swedish quality wine for the first time. The white wine Immelen 2022 from Kullbergs Vingård in Skåne will be served with the main course. Previously, Swedish ice apple wine was served with dessert, but a still Swedish wine has never been served before. Another novelty is that it is a white wine - traditionally red wine is served with the main course.
„It's a fantastic feeling,“ comments Victor Dahl, CEO.
„We have come a long way. Our first vines were planted in 2006 and our company in its current form was founded just over ten years ago.“
Kullabergs Vingård has set its sights high from the outset and has engaged internationally experienced winemakers and winegrowers. A state-of-the-art winery was recently built, which has been nominated for the Swedish Wood Award 2024 architecture prize. Immelen is the winery's flagship wine and has already gained international recognition. The 2021 vintage received the highest score at the Swedish Wine Tasting 2024, where twelve Swedish wines were compared with twelve international wines of the same style and price range. The jury included some of the world's leading sommeliers and wine writers. Immelen 2022 will be served at the Nobel Banquet 2025.
„It is one of our most homogeneous vintages to date. We had a good balance between sun and rain, with no unpleasant surprises in the form of storms or hail“, says winemaker Nicola D'Agostini. „We were able to harvest healthy grapes with really good ripeness, especially Solaris. The vintage is now easy to drink, with integrated oak and a round mouthfeel.“
Immelen is a cuvée whose grape composition varies slightly from year to year. The 2022 vintage consists of 87 % of Solaris, the rest are Souvignier Gris and Muscaris. All grapes are so-called PIWI varieties, fungus-resistant grape varieties that are suitable for our northern climate and enable sustainable agriculture.
This commitment continues at Kullabergs Vingård, where passion, science and terroir come together to create wines with a distinctive identity. This spring, Helena Lindberg joined Nico D'Agostini to work together as winemakers. She has more than 20 years of international experience and comes most recently from Biserno in Tuscany, where she worked as a group winemaker. She says:
„It's very exciting to have the opportunity to work with grape varieties that are new to me, and in a completely different climate. It's also inspiring to be involved in the development of the emerging Swedish wine industry.“
Immelen is a cuvée made from our best grapes, with Solaris always making up the largest proportion.
D'Agostini says:
„Solaris ripens early and reaches a good sugar content here in Sweden. However, the acidity drops quickly, so it is important to be precise when harvesting. Souvignier Gris takes longer to ripen and retains its acidity, so the two varieties complement each other well. Due to its late ripening and high acidity, Souvignier Gris is well suited for sparkling wine, but we can also chaptalise at any time if necessary.“
A further four hectares will be planted next year. The new winery, which was built according to the latest oenological standards, has a capacity of 100,000 bottles.
Background Kullabergs Vingård
Our winery is located at the foot of the rocky Kullaberg peninsula in the south of Sweden. The proximity to the sea and the long, bright days enable us to grow high quality grapes. We currently cultivate around 22 hectares planted with different grape varieties. We pride ourselves on working with sustainable viticultural methods and caring for both our soil and our environment. Among other things, we grow a mixture of herbs and flowers between the rows of vines to promote biodiversity and improve soil health.
Kullabergs Vingård produces fresh and fruity wines with an aromatic character and a pleasant acidity. In addition to wine, we also produce dry cider and a range of fine spirits. We are delighted to have won several medals at international wine competitions - in particular the three-star award from AWC, the world's largest and one of the most prestigious wine ratings. The Royal Academy of Gastronomy has awarded the winery a diploma for our efforts to promote Swedish wine.
We also offer a warm and welcoming visitor experience, including guided tours of the vineyard and winery, day conferences and during the summer season the Skänken wine bar is open. We have been awarded „Experience of the Year 2024” by Visit Skåne and nominated for the Grand Tourism Prize 2025 in Sweden.
