Agricultural and Winter Days 2026 in Mainz-Hechtsheim: PIWI in dialogue with the industry
The Agricultural and Winter Days took place in Mainz-Hechtsheim from 4 to 6 February 2026. As in previous years, PIWI Deutschland e.V. was represented together with ECOVIN with a shared stand. This cooperation resulted in a large, attractive trade fair presence that attracted numerous visitors and provided space for in-depth discussions.
The discussions at the stand centred on the following questions in particular:
- Which PIWI grape varieties can I plant?
- What are the marketing opportunities for PIWI wines?
- Are PIWI grape varieties only suitable for organic viticulture?
- Is it possible to completely dispense with pesticides through PIWI cultivation?
The discussions clearly showed that interest in PIWI grape varieties remains high, but at the same time there is a great need for categorisation and practical guidance. With regard to the choice of variety, reference was made to the expertise of the respective vine breeders, who can provide site- and farm-specific advice.
The marketing of PIWI wines was also a key topic. It became clear that market success depends heavily on the individual sales and communication concept of each winery. PIWI Germany supports its members with information material, the PIWI logo for bottle labelling and various advertising materials, among other things.
It was also clearly communicated that PIWI grape varieties can be used sensibly in both organic and conventional viticulture. With regard to plant protection, it was emphasised that although PIWI grape varieties enable a significant reduction in the use of pesticides, it is not possible to completely dispense with them. The specific design is always the responsibility of the winegrowers and depends on the location, weather conditions and plant control.
PIWI quality made tangible
In order to demonstrate not only the advantages in the vineyard but also the sensory quality, several award-winning wines from the German PIWI Wine Award 2025 were served at the stand. At the same time, the 2026 German PIWI Wine Award was advertised and participants were invited to take part.
PIWI Germany also provided information about other relevant events, including Eurovino and planned activities at the Market of Good Taste - Slow Food Fair.
Our conclusion
The Agricultural and Winter Days 2026 were once again characterised by intensive discussions, great interest and a constructive exchange. They once again confirmed the growing importance of PIWI grape varieties for sustainable and responsible viticulture.
