Largest PIWI competition in the German-speaking world for „future varieties“!

Graz, April 2026

A record-breaking number of Austrian PIWI wines were entered for the 8th PIWI AUSTRIA WEINPREIS. A high-calibre international jury assessed PIWI wines from eight wine-growing provinces.

The non-profit association „PIWI Austria“ organised the PIWI Austria Wine Award, a wine competition for Austrian wines made from new, promising grape varieties, for the eighth time. 242 wines from 88 different wineries were registered for the jury tasting on 9 April! From Lake Constance to Lake Neusiedl, wines from eight Austrian federal states were represented. The largest PIWI wine competition in the German-speaking world has now established itself as a fixture in the wine year.

The most frequently registered grape varieties were Souvignier gris, Muscaris and Blütenmuskateller for the whites and Roesler and Pinot Nova for the reds. The largest number of entries (93) came from Styria, followed by Lower Austria (87), Carinthia (33), Burgenland (10), Upper Austria (9), Vorarlberg (5), Vienna (3) and Tyrol (8).

As in previous years, the jury tasting was held in the sensory room at the Haidegg testing centre in Graz. The jury of recognised local and international experts judged the wines according to the international 20-point system. Depending on the number of points, gold or silver plaques will soon be awarded. Winners were chosen in 12 categories.
