SATIN NOIR (VB 91-26-29)

General:

The Satin Noir variety comes from 1991 by Valentin Blattner and is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and resistance partners. The variety clearly shows the genetic relationship to Cabernet Sauvignon. The thick berry skin of the small, concentrated aromatic and colorful berries with a loose grape structure are typical of the variety. Also in the vinification, the wines are deep red in a ripe, harmonious Cabernet manner with a ripeness that is about 10 days before the classic grape variety.

Grape:

The grape is short, loose and little shouldered. The berry is round and about the same size as Cabernet.

Resistance:

Peronospora: + + +
Oidium: + + +
Botrytis: + +

Wine:

The wine is characterized by a deep red, dense color.

The taste reminds of a very ripe Cabernet Franc with ripe black blackberries and currants, black pepper and dark chocolate with hints of cigar, leather and cedar.

Cultivation recommendation:

The growth is very upright, which means that little effort is required for the foliage work. The very loose leaf wall ensures good ventilation of the grape zone without additional defoliation, especially in damp regions. The ripening time is about 10 - 14 days before Cabernet Sauvignon beginning to mid-October. The harvest period can be extended due to the botrytis firmness.

SAUVIGNAC (VB Cal 6-04)

General:

As a pioneer of the so-called "Cal." Series by Valentin Blattner, the variety was created from a cross between Sauvignon Blanc x Riesling x resistance partners. It represents the new generation of piwis.

On the one hand, the robustness against fungal diseases could be sustainably improved by multiple crosses with different resistance genetics. On the other hand, the “Vinifera” elderly parts of the variety lend a complex variety of aromas, depending on the location, maturity and style of expansion, between Riesling and Scheurebe. Volker Freytag has been intensively involved in growing trials for more than ten years. Cultivation and expansion properties of this variety promise great potential for stylish wines that correspond to the spirit of the times.

Resistance:

Peronospora: + + +
Oidium: + + +
Botrytis: + + +

Grape:

The panicle size of the loose-grape is comparable to Riesling. The medium-sized berries are very botrytis-proof due to the thick berry skin. The full maturity is indicated by a pink color.

Wine:

This variety shows a wide range of flavors in wine depending on the degree of maturity, style of expansion and use of yeast. Wines classically developed in Riesling style smell of apricot, ripe apple and grapefruit.

Reductive winemaking produces wines reminiscent of Scheurebe with aromas of lime and subtle black currant.

A stable acid is typical and remains present both when the grapes are ripe on the vine and when they are ripe.

Cultivation recommendation:

The variety is designed for cultivation on a wide range of soils and layers. Their medium growth is comparable to Riesling, as is their good maturity in wood and resistance to frost. The ripening period begins about 10 days before the Riesling. Due to the acid stability and the thick berry skin, the harvest window can be extended until the end of October.
