PIWI Lombardia annuncia il PIWI LOMBARDIA ITALIAN TOUR 2022

PIWI Lombardy announces the PIWI LOMBARDIA ITALIAN TOUR 2022
6th-16th May 2022

Cenate Sopra, March 10, 2022 - PIWI Lombardia, the association of Lombardy producers using resistant grape varieties (PIWI), is pleased to announce the first tour in some of the most important Italian cities to present their wines and some gastronomic delights of the Lombardy region .

PIWI stands for "fungus-resistant vines". These varieties are also known as "super organic" because they allow the highest quality wines to be produced without harming the environment. They allow viticulture that is essentially free of fungicides, thus protecting the people who work in the vineyards, the soil and the end users.

PIWI Lombardy is the only PIWI regional association in the world that has an ecological basis.

The tour consists of seven stations in the cities of Bergamo, Pisa, Florence, Naples, Rome, Modena and Milan, where the same number of personal tastings take place.

New grape varieties are planted due to climate change – GERŠTMAJEROVI VINOGRADI Croatia

Climate change, rising raw material prices, but also the desire to expand the assortment are the main reasons why, probably in the spring of next year, the vineyards of the famous Baranja wine family Gerštmajer will be enriched with some new grape varieties. However, the Graševina will continue to dominate in their vineyards, and the current eight grape varieties will be expanded with two or three new ones. – At the moment we have 13 hectares of vineyards, but some of them are 80 years old. We have already cleared about three hectares, we will do the same with a certain area, so we will get ten hectares of young vineyards, which will contain some new grape varieties – says Ivan Gerštmajer Zelember.

New generation of pathogen-resistant wine grape varieties in Hungary – by Dr. Pal Kozma

Summary of an article from Borászati Füzetek magazine – Hungary
written by Dr. Pal Kozma

There is a strong societal demand and expectation for environmental and health protection. The EU plans to take further decisive steps to limit the use of environmentally harmful chemicals in agriculture. One of the prerequisites for the development of environmentally friendly, profitable and competitive viticulture is the creation and introduction of varieties resistant to the main pathogens, while maintaining good quality. The genetic results of the last decades make it possible to achieve these goals. As a result of the breeding activities of the Research Institute of Viticulture and Oenology in Pécs, 6 white and 1 red varieties have received state approval and another 10 white and 3 red varieties are in the certification process. Community plant variety rights were granted for two innovative resistant grape varieties.

Strategy meeting of the board of PIWI International in Prien am Chiemsee

Board-Prien
Prien, Germany, Hotel Luitpold am See

Ten women and men meet over a long weekend to take up the years of intensive work at PIWI International, but also in the regional groups, and to convert it into a strategy paper.

They are long days with intensive exchanges and sometimes controversial discussions, driven by emotions and dictated by needs that are also regionally based. It is worked on and formulated or defined point by point.

PIWI opens up a completely new dimension in viticultural development and grape production.
Where should we develop?
How do you define international and how regional?
How does PIWI communicate internationally with its members, with its groups? On the outside, but especially on the inside?
How do we deal with logo, brand, definitions, formulations?
How do we feel about new breeding methods?
How do we see the viticulture of the future?
How do we measure and communicate regionality, CO2 neutrality, naturalness?

Exciting questions that would not have been possible to answer or develop so extensively if the entire board with our secretary Gisela.Wüstinger and our member Michael Reiter from the Palatinate (formulation of the strategy paper and moderation of the exam) had not already done extensive preparatory work.
In the next few days we will edit the strategy paper and forward it to the regional groups.

A heartfelt “thank you” to everyone involved and to all hard-working and enterprising souls in the regions and countries.
I look forward to the developments in 2022 and the shared achievements.

Stay healthy
your president
Alexander Morandell

Norway wants PIWI wines from Austria

February 24, 2022 – The Norwegian alcohol monopoly is adding Austrian wine made from fungus-resistant grape varieties (PIWI) to its range. The gratifying development that these wines have taken in Austria in recent years is thus receiving further momentum. Austrian PIWI wines also impress with top ratings at international wine awards.

The Norwegian alcohol monopoly Vinmonopolet recently opened its own tender for PIWI wines from Austria. A tender is a separate import quota in Norway's alcohol market, which is strictly regulated by the state. Until the end of March, winemakers from Austria can now submit their PIWI wines made from Cabernet Blanc, Donauriesling or Donauveltliner from the 2021 vintage to Vinmonopolet. The selected wines will be on sale from September.

New information brochure "Fungus-resistant grape varieties" from the WBI Freiburg

The Freiburg State Viticulture Institute has published a new brochure on its fungus-resistant new varieties. The brochure is now available for download on the WBI website (https://wbi.landwirtschaft-bw.de/pb/,Lde/Startseite/Fachinfo/Pilzwiderstandsfaehige+Keltertraubensorten). The brochure is also available in English, French and Italian.

Furthermore, the WBI points out that the Souvignier Gris variety is a cross between Seyval Blanc x Zähringer. Cabernet Sauvignon and Bronner were originally assumed as parent varieties, and this information can still be found in some publications. However, a genome analysis of the seedling stock commissioned by the Freiburg State Viticulture Institute in 2019 clearly showed that the mother variety is Seyval Blanc and the father is the Zähringer variety.

Fungus-resistant grape varieties play a central role in the increasingly ecological orientation in viticulture. With the results of its resistance breeding, the Freiburg State Viticulture Institute is making a significant contribution to the protection of nature, profitability and the winegrowers in terms of sustainable vineyard management. Many of the new Freiburg breeds are also met with great interest outside of Germany and are now cultivated in over 30 countries. This makes the WBI one of the world's leading research institutions in vine breeding.

I am happy to answer any additional questions.

The "Voltis" grape variety has been approved for the production of Champagne AOC.

L'Institut National de l'Origine et de la Qualité (Inao) confirmed the application for approval of the resistant grape variety Volits for the production of Champagne AOC. This new breed is the first resistant grape variety to be included in a French appellation.
“Voltis is one of the answers to the important question of coexistence between residents and producers. Above all, it is about developing practices and consumption in the spirit of sustainability,” explains Maxime Toubart, co-president of the Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne (Civc) and president of the Syndicat Général des Vignerons (SGV).
