PIWI'S BIG WINE ADVENTURE

Ever try learning German?

Or maybe the better question is: ever fail at the attempt? Perhaps because the language is full of words like Motor vehicle liability insurance (third party vehicle insurance), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) or Danube Steamship Company (Danube Steamship Company)?

One mouthful that exists only in our fair language is Mushroom-resistant grape varieties. Admittedly this term, which translates to fungus-resistant grape varieties, is unwieldy even for Germans, who typically shorten it to PIWI - pronounced pee-vee. Which, coincidentally, is also how Germans pronounce the name of the hero of Tim Burton's 1985 directorial debut. Remember that one? Pee Wee's Big Adventure with Paul Reubens, Elisabeth Daily, and Mark Holton? No? Ok, perhaps not Burton's finest work.

The English term for PIWI is also a lot easier to pronounce than Mushroom-resistant grape varieties. It's simply hybrid. Yet if you ask the people who work with them, they'll say that that term alone isn't enough, preferring instead to call them pioneer varieties. A bit of explanation might help.

PIWI in practice - 3 workshops in summer 2021

This summer, the Naturland specialist advisory service invited to three workshops under the motto “What is the productivity of fungus-resistant grape varieties?”.  Vine & Wine was there.

In August, numerous winegrowers from the region met at the Roth winery in Wiesenbronn to participate in the VitiFit project to exchange experiences in the Piwi cultivation. In the special downy mildew year of 2021, the strengths, but also the weaknesses of these grape varieties could be analyzed in the best possible way.

Electrochemical measurements in wine, benchmark for quality?

in collaboration with

Graphics-staller-big

The growth of the plants depends on various environmental parameters such as light and water, but above all on the soil. Different prerequisites thus shape the quality of all products that humans consume by utilizing the chemically stored energy to maintain their bodily functions.

While conventional food tests only provide isolated information about ingredients or caloric content, the electrochemical measurement also records the portion in the food that is responsible for the structural work (the so-called. Entropy share) can deliver.

From a physical point of view, life processes can be seen as a chain of Redox reactions describe.

Derived from the main principles of thermodynamics, it can be shown that the quality of food is above that Redox potential can be represented:

The lower this value, the higher the quality and the neutralization Free radicals.

PIWIS - around the world

Wolfgang Renner, Research Station Haidegg, Chairman PIWI Austria, Board Member PIWI International

With advancing climate change and the need to meet the challenges of the “Green Deal” in agriculture, too, interest in sustainable production methods is growing. Fungal-resistant grape varieties are a functioning alternative for viticulture.

In Austria, according to multiple applications, around 1.5 percent of the vineyard area is currently planted with fungus-resistant grape varieties. This corresponds to an absolute area of around 700 hectares. In Styria there are around 150 hectares (2.9% of the Styrian vineyards). Muscaris, souvignier gris and flower muscatel are most commonly grown here. But what happens outside of Austria in traditionally “conservative” wine-growing countries? -
Here is a brief overview of some of the activities in Europe and overseas.

PIWI varieties at a glance - results in the rainy year 2021

PIWI vines have been around for over a hundred years. Only a few were able to establish and hold onto. While the time of the regent seems to have expired, Léon Millot or Maréchal Foch are still being grown. But in times of ecological agriculture and climate change, more and more winegrowers are interested in new varieties that spring up like mushrooms. Piwi pioneer Edy Geiger provides an overview.
